1. What is Obstructive Sleep Apnoea?
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a condition where the upper airway becomes blocked during sleep, causing brief interruptions in breathing. These interruptions lead to brief awakenings, allowing you to resume normal breathing but disrupting your sleep cycle. This condition can significantly impact your quality of life and is associated with various symptoms, including daytime fatigue, morning headaches, sleepiness, irritability and poor concentration.
2. What is a home sleep study?
A home sleep study is a diagnostic test performed in the comfort of your own home using advanced sleep monitoring equipment. This test helps to identify whether you have obstructive sleep apnoea. It also evaluates your snoring and the sleeping positions in which the symptoms are most prevalent. After the test, a detailed report is generated for your healthcare provider and our team to review, along with recommendations for appropriate treatment.
3. What is the cost of the sleep study?
If you meet the referral criteria your sleep study is fully-bulk billed. If you do not meet criteria, or don’t hold a valid medicare card the cost of a sleep study is $320.
4. What should I wear on the night of my sleep study?
It is recommended that you wear comfortable sleepwear that allows you to relax throughout the night. Since you will be connected to monitoring equipment when you leave the clinic, it is advisable to wear something you won't need to change out of later. Additionally, please avoid wearing makeup or skincare products, and refrain from scheduling any activities immediately after the study.
5. Will I receive a consultation to review my results after the study?
Yes, a follow-up consultation is an essential part of the process. During this session, we will thoroughly discuss your results, ensuring that you understand the findings and how they relate to your symptoms. We will also review the treatment options recommended by your sleep physician and provide ongoing support to help you manage your condition effectively.
6. Is CPAP therapy noisy or uncomfortable?
No, CPAP therapy is neither noisy nor uncomfortable once you are accustomed to it. Although it may feel unfamiliar at first, our team will guide you through the process, ensuring you are comfortable with its use. With time and support, you will adjust to using CPAP regularly and begin to experience the many benefits of the therapy, including better sleep and improved overall well-being.
7. Do you have affordable devices, I hear CPAP is expensive?
Yes, we stock a wide range of devices from affordable to high end. Our sleep team will discuss all the options to ensure we find one that suits you budget. If you require CPAP therapy we want to ensure that you promptly go onto therapy as untreated OSA can cause a myriad of health and safety issues.
8. What is the cost of getting started on CPAP therapy?
We offer two options- the first is to purchase the CPAP outright but with the confidence of a 30 day money back guarantee on the ResMed units. You will be supported on your CPAP machine to ensure you have the best therapeutic and comfort settings. This option is better value for money. The second option is a trial which costs $250. This is redeemable on the price of the machine.
9. I've seen machines online. Are these the same as your machines?
Yes and no, CPAP requires support from a trained sleep therapist to ensure that the machine is set to your required pressures and comfort settings. The machines online are set to factory settings and may not treat your sleep apnoea as quickly and effectively as a personalised machine set to your prescription. Our fully trained team work with your clinical data to ensure that the machine is curated to your personal respiratory needs.
